Draft Evaluation

On my research of case studies I looked at two brands of R&B magazines Billboard and Vibe. So I could get a valuable gathering of primary research that would give me an idea of what conventions established R&B magazines have that makes them successful.

The two front pages I looked at both used the colour red in the main image their artists for example in Billboard Rihanna’s hair was red and in Vibe Lil Wayne was wearing a red sailor’s jacket. This gives connotations of passion and danger. This colour must have been used to draw reader’s attention in more. They both also have a White large masthead, so readers can clearly see what magazine it Is. The amount of text on the page was to a minimum on both front covers as the main image of the artist takes most of the attention.

The differences of these magazine front covers is the pose of the artist in each magazine in Billboard Rihanna is crawling, whilst have direct eye contact with the camera. Whereas in Billboard Lil Wayne is standing directly in front of the camera and has sunglasses on, looking up towards the sky. This may show the importance of the artist, as he may be considered to be a higher status than everyone else and Vibe may be using a different approach to grab reader’s attention, by attracting men in a seductive way.

After looking at these aspects of the magazines I wanted my magazine to challenge conventions and make my magazine a little different to the others, so that it would stand out. On the front cover I used the colour Green, to give the overall appearance of a fresh new look. When looking at both of artists of the magazine I also realised that they were both afro Caribbean, so I decided to use a different approach and created an artist, with a different ethnicity.

Even though I tried to make my magazine different to competitors, there are some similarities. I was more inspired with the Billboard magazine than Vibe. I didn’t put too much information on the page and the layout and design for my sell lines are similar to Billboard. As I have the main text in a white box and extra information underneath. I had my artist name going across the page so that readers could clearly see who it is.

The two contents pages that I looked at were completely different from each other, which was what I wanted so that I could get a variation of ideas. Billboards contents page is different to Vibe’s by the amount of information that is put on the page. It has four images and had a table that states the top No1 albums, songs and ect… that are out, making their contents page more interactive. Whereas Vibe went for the classy less cluttered look and included only the features of the magazine and one main image of the main artist in a greyscale over tone.

There aren’t many similarities but they both used a black font for the masthead ‘Contents’, but both use different style as Vibe has the letters underneath each other and Billboard has a robotic look by having white lines within the lettering.

When creating my magazines contents page I decided to use the ideas of both vibe and Billboard. I didn’t put too much information on the page but managed to show all the information that would be inside. I did use multiple images as I thought it would look more appealing if readers could see pictures of artists that would be in the magazine. With each image I put the page number inside of it, so people could easily indicate where in the magazine it is going to be.

I made sure that I put the name of my magazine ‘Upbeat’ in the top left corner of the page as I noticed that both magazines did this as Vibe had a large ‘V’ placed behind the main image and Billboard simply had it on the top half of the left page. However I didn’t have my masthead styled in any particular way as I wanted to stay simple because of the bright colour I used in my contents page I didn’t want my magazine to cheap.

Furthermore I also looked at double page spreads which I noticed that they don’t use many colours but stick to a strict colour palette. By using the colours red and black on the artist, as if they are both bringing out their dangerous side. Also the poses that both artists had were very serious and powerful as both artists had an emotionless expression on their face.

When I looked at one of the double page spreads I liked the way they used multiple images of the artist in the background, to show their personality and made it in black and white, so it seemed as if it was the personality we didn’t know about. Then with the other magazine I liked the fact that the main image had the whole left side of the page, so reader’s attention drew straight to the artist as she was an international well known singer.

When creating my double page spread I wanted to use the ideas of both of these magazines had, so I made sure the right side of my double page spread main focus was my artist. Which I used four different pictures of her doing different poses to show different sides of her personality. I kept the colour of the images instead of putting them in black and white as I still wanted my magazine to be different to other competitors.

When looking at the text of both of them I noticed that their text was positioned the same as they are both going vertical. However, I decided to have a different approach and made my text go horizontal and vertical with quotes inside them. I thought this made my text look a lot more fun as my pictures showed the same theme and I wanted that to come across the whole of the two pages. I created this theme further by not using the colour red but sticking with the colours Green, White and Black.

In my research I was able to look at press packs and noticed how interactive they were and how the magazine companies managed to have websites, Facebook pages, Twitter and etc, So that they can reach everybody in the world. In my proposal I discussed how I wanted to do the same thing so I made sure that I included website in my magazine so that this can be done.

On my Blogger I put five questions up so that I was able to get feedback from people so I could see who they thought my magazine was targeted and how particular social groups are represented. When deciding on what age range they believed that my magazine was targeted at overall the age range was between 18-25 year olds. Which I’m very pleased at. My main goal was 16-20 year olds so that result is still in my age range. They decided it was for a male and female audience but made further comments that they thought it was more on the female prospect than male because of the colour scheme. But as I had images of male artists on my contents page this took this aspect away. Furthermore they put the magazine in the category that it will be targeted at upper class and possibly working class. They believed this from the layout of the magazine as there wasn’t much information on the front page and contents page, this made it very formal. This is a positive light on the social group as its where I wanted my magazine to be targeted at , which I stated In my proposal.

On the overall appearance of my model and what she is wearing, I think that she does represent the upper class social group because of her designer furry jacket that she is wearing and because the magazine would be published in December she will be in that months fashion trend.

From the clothing of what my models are wearing than their location, this reflects more of the social group as one of my models is trying to target the females with a flowing yellow dress. Then my male models have a strong pose looking down attracting the male and female audience.

My magazine would be a mass market product even though its social group is for upper class and working class. As the content of my magazine doesn’t just have information on music even though 80% of it is .There is 20% of it being about lifestyle as well, so it gives the chance for readers to look and feel like a celebrity. Which I hope would widen the amount of readers as the other 80% is split up into different sections of the R&B industry explaining the latest news, events and little bits of gossip that may be going around. This would make mine a mass market product than a niche market as there’s content in my magazine for everyone.

To make sure that I was right with this decision, I did some more independent research and I made sure that my target group agreed with this and asked them to read my draft of my journalism for my double page spread. I wanted to see if they enjoyed it, that they would actually read it and too see how I could make it better for them. They all believed that it was something that they would read as they are always interested when artists make new albums or are making a comeback.

In my proposal I stated that IPC would be the publisher to publish my magazine. As they were the Uk’S Leading consumer brands publisher and publish with 60 iconic brands, which I wanted my magazine to be part of. Therefore I wanted my magazine to be international meaning that it will be distributed in two or more countries. These will be in the UK and America, as the artists that will be in the magazine will be from these regions. Therefore making them unknown to other countries in the world and better suited for these.

I will be having my magazine distributed in local corner shops and supermarkets. So that everybody will be able to reach them, however for the loyal consumers there will be a chance for them to get an order of ‘Upbeat’ magazine every month to their house. Through signing up in the internet, so it becomes a lot easier for them. I will also have a website that will have the latest artists in the charts, games that will provide the chance of consumers producing their own song and competitions. This will make my product a cross media product. There will also be a Facebook page, where every week we will upload a picture to do with the latest news, for example a picture of a new album that’s coming out and asking consumers who they think this is? Or having a song up with two different artists singing it and asking people who they think sung it better. I think this would make our target audience more interested in our product and want to get involved with certain things. It will also bring more consumers in. Furthermore we would also offer an app that people can get on their phones so they can give them frequently the latest news and ask for comments about things and also give them another chance to put their names forward in competitions. With the possible aspect of them having the chance to meet a celebrity or winning some products or attending an event for free.

On my front page I managed to attract my audience from the colours used, by not using the typical colours you normally see in an R&B magazine. So that it would stand out amongst the other magazine brands. I also had my model making direct contact with the camera to build intimacy and make it look like she is looking at you. Her name is also the second largest font on the page so that readers can see her name clearly from far distances and can notice it’s something important as in the double page spread it states she’s making a comeback. From most of the audience feedback that said they liked the clear easy to read concept I had to my magazine by only using a couple of words for my sell lines.

I believe the idea of me having a model that isn’t a stereotypical model that you would see on a magazine like this, makes my magazine more unique. I also made her do dress changes instead of making her wear the same clothing across all three pages. I first had her in a furry jacket for the front cover. A red dress with leopard print heels in the contents page and a colourful green dress and big Jewellery in the double page spread. I did this so that it will show different sides of her personality and attract both the male and female audience with her different outfits.

To address my audience I did use different types of media so that they would be more intrigued with the product I will be producing , as I used Prezi to do my magazine proposal and was using blogger to ask them particular questions about my magazine.

From the process of constructing this product I have learnt a great deal of technology skills. On Photoshop I’m now capable of cutting the background out of an image, using the ruler tool by making sure that all text and images are in line with one another. Then, controlling the layers by locking them as this prevents me from changing or moving the layers around.

I used InDesign for constructing my magazines Contents and Double page spread. This is a lot better source when creating pages that have a lot of text in it as well as images. As this gave me the chance to change things around and re size images ,allowing the text to overlap certain colours or having quotes placed in the middle of them.

By using Blogger this allowed me to reach out to my target audience quicker and easier, so that they could access any work I have created or designed, from anywhere with an internet service. This made it more efficient when I needed to collect feedback from people. As by using paper and asking for people to write it, may have involved me not getting as much detailed information than what I did successfully get given. Blogger also allowed me to design the wallpaper of each blog you publish so that it could reflect your magazine and make the appearance of your blogger more interesting for my audience.

I also managed to create a proposal instead of using the usual PowerPoint, I used Prezi , which was more interactive and made my work a lot my interesting to look at when I was making my pitch to my audience. Furthermore I have also used four other technologies for my evaluation, to also show the various amount of technologies that I’m am also capable to use.

From looking back at my preliminary task of creating my college magazine I have come a long way as I’ve managed to use different technologies and understand the magazine industry a lot more than what I have before. As doing research before I conducted each task before creating my magazine made me create a magazine that challenges the normal conventions that you would find in an R&B magazine to make my product unique.

I understand the importance of fonts and how it can change the whole concept of your magazine. For instance bubble writing is what your normally find in a children magazine and graffiti is what you possibly could find in a rock magazine. I also realised that you must keep the same font amongst all the pages as this gives your magazine a lot more professional look.

I now understand different camera angles such as close ups, long shot, point of view and etc.. That have helped me understand photography a lot more as in my preliminary task, I mostly consistently used the same shot for each image, whereas now in my music magazine, I have produced different shot types.

Journalism- (Draft) Double Page spread

Return of the Diva

6 Grammy awards and wants more? Michelle Scott is back with a bang! A new body, a new voice and she is not afraid to show it.

Michelle took a 5 year break to have her 4 year old girl Lucy and to have a break from the stage lights. But now, the pounds have shred and she wants to give the current artists on the stage, ‘a run for their mic’.

‘Hit the stage, like I’ve never hit it before’

She’s hitting off a new vibe by not singing her usual love and heart break songs, but about being a diva and loving life. She’s sending out her new album ‘ink’ across the globe in January. Ink is meant to hit the top of the charts, in record breaking time. So be ready to hit that download button.

‘Performance of a lifetime’

Her sense of style has also changed, as her wardrobe is more gilts and glam than ever before. From walking into the interview with a sequined corset and 6 inch high heels! You wouldn’t have thought she was a mother of three or Michelle Scott for that matter. She said ‘that you will never be too old, to have fun, so a little sparkle here and there. Is just what the doctor ordered’.

We’ve noticed that Michelle has been a Size 10, Size 16 and now a size 6? Where is she going? She’s never been this thin! Her new trainer Mart Parker, who’s had a history of training Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Has trimmed and slid Michelle into the beach body of the century. His courageous diet is made up of steamed vegetables, fruit and killer miles of running. She said that it was ‘extremely hard work’ but she want to ‘hit the stage, like I’ve never hit it before and give my fans a performance of a lifetime’. So we wish her luck, even though we know she can do it!

We asked Michelle how her life is, being a mother of three. She smiled and said that‘it’s the best feeling in the world, only when you get some sleep in the middle of the night’. I think we all agree on that one.

Later on in the interview we asked Michelle if she feels at all intimidated, from the new upcoming artists. As Rita Ora and Carly Jepsen have each had their first hit single, hit the number one spot in the charts. She replied ‘an experienced sheep should never be worried about the new lambs’. So we asked why the change in genre? She laughed and said ‘I just wanted to try something different and walk into the studio, with something fresh, but so far the risk is working’. But we all wouldn’t mind if she went back to the old her, even though the new her is full of fun!

Magazine News Stand

The music magazines were placed near the back of the shop, next to the gossip magazines. At this particular shop that I went to there was only a small selection of music magazines, mostly based on instruments than specific genres of music. The most established magazines were placed at eye level, so that they are easy to see and grab for readers. The least popular magazines were placed at the bottom of the news stand. To see these you had to bend down, especially the ones placed at the back of the news stand, these were also difficult to grab.
The R&B magazines that are placed at the front of the news stand, display the whole front cover of the magazine, without having any of the shops advertisement blocking any of the information. The magazines that are placed behind these only show the Masthead, skylines and the top part of the main image. This layout allows consumers that are loyal and buy the same magazine frequently and easy way to find there magazine. With every magazine you was capable of seeing the full masthead and part of their main image.

There’s a mixture of colours, mostly red, black and white. These colours are the ones mostly used but however gold is another colour that stands out well amongst the other colours but there is only small amounts used.

College Magzine-Audience Feedback& Evaluation

Audience Feedback and Evaluation

I called my college magazine Inspire, as the target of my magazine is to be inspirational for students. As it should hopefully, help them with college life and everything around it.

The layout of the magazine is formal, as it doesn’t have any shapes or different fonts. I did this so that it looked more grown up as students are growing into young adults, so it would look more appealing to them. I had a limited colour palette of three colours, blue, yellow and white. I used these colours as they were bright and can go very well together.

Furthermore it has all the conventions that a typical college magazine would have.
On the top right of Inspire magazine, it has its website where consumers can find out more information about things amongst everything that has been published in the magazine. It also has the issue number, so they know how many have been published so far.

The main image of my magazine cover was a medium close up, of a 16 year old female student in college. She’s wearing a blue dress that went with the limited colour scheme, with a pair of large classes. She was holding a blue folder close to her body to make it clear that she was a student. The background showed a set of yellow lockers, to show that she’s presently at college. My most of my audience feedback told me that this was a good image to have as just from the image you can tell what type of magazine it is.

The main image isn’t more important than the masthead inspire, as the person isn’t a celebrity. So the masthead goes over the image. Inspire is in a dark blue and is the largest font on the page.
The Skyline indicates that it’s the biggest Uk college magazine, this is done so it has an advantage to other magazines. As it portrays to that this would be a better and trustworthy magazine to buy.
The Sell lines involved the topics gossip, education and events to attend to, because these topics are appropriate for this magazine. ‘Book Club’, this relates to the main image.

‘Hot Colourful loud, its fiesta Latina’ I used this as a sell line, as it’s catchy and fun as it describes the event before announcing it.
‘Sir said he will buy the diapers’, shows that there is an article about student having her teachers baby. Student and teacher relationships are showing more in the media industry, so I made one to show that the magazine is up to date.
‘Mix and Match, West end Broadway’,displays another theatre event that is on this month, that people should attend to.

My feedback told me that I had good sell lines and were very relevant but I could have had a better anchorage as it could have been illustrated better, to make it sound more interesting and fun.

I used the line 100% free, for the pricing of inspire and had it in block capitals as this would get my target audience to grab one. As Students don’t tend to have a lot of money as they are still in full time education.

If I had the chance to improve my magazine I would change the anchorage completely, But still make it relevant to my main image. As I thought that it didn’t sound as interesting as the other sell lines on the magazine.

Furthermore I would also change one of the colours in the colour scheme, as I think I should have used a bolder colour instead of white. The white text was hard to see on the yellow background. Black would have been better as it’s easier to see from long distances and it stands out on the colour yellow.

When it comes to developing my music magazine, I need to make sure that I plan the layout of the magazine. When creating my college magazine, I spent too much time rearranging and debating on the layout of the magazine. Where, if I already had a plan, I would have finished it a lot earlier.

Secondly, make sure I have a clear understanding of what I want the issue to be about. So the theme and main image are relevant, as this could lead me into loosing mark. As well as not having my magazine at its full potential.

Thirdly, to make sure that I use bright and bold colours for my magazine colour scheme. If I used the right colours, than the overall appearance of my magazine would be better.

Research/Case Studies 7

This double page spread celebrates Solange Knowles successful R&B album.

Blue font is used to show the most important information. For example the name of the magazine ‘now’ is printed on the top left corner in this colour as well as the artist name ‘Solange knowles’. They have used this colour as it stands out amongst the other text on the page as it contrasts with the black and white. It also draws the readers to the text, which helps them indicate to what this particular article is about.

The text on the other side of the page is in a bold and black font. This also grabs the audience’s attention and draws them on to that part of the page.

There are six images of Solange in the background, dancing and posing representing her different personalities. So the readers can feel more connected to the article. The images are in black and white which demonstrates, that she’s showing the of her side that not many of her readers or fans know. The black lines under her feet breaks up the page so it’s clearer to read and looks like could it could be a stage.

The main image on the page shows Solange in a dress in the colour red. Red represents love, passion and danger. The bottom of the dress comes out and looks like two large roses, which could mean that the red is representing the love side. However, the Sell line on the left says ‘forget her sister’ this could be representing the danger side. She’s also wearing a black fluffy jacket going over her dress, large jewellery and unique heels which is fashionable and will appeal to young audiences, who follow fashion trends. Her hands are placed behind her back this looks very childlike and shows her innocent side. Her curly hair also shows this. Her eyes have direct contact with the audience, showing a sign of intimacy and draws the audience onto the page.

Research/Case Studies 6

Billboards contents page is packed full of information. It doesn’t have a limited colour palette. It’s very colourful but has a plain white background. This still gives it a formal concept.

The Masthead‘Contents’ is in a black and bold large font. That makes it stand out amongst all the other information on the page. It has white lines in each of the letters this makes it look like it’s been stencilled on, which gives it a more urban look.

On the right of the contents page, there’s a table showing what is number one in charts. It’s broken up into ‘albums’, ‘songs’ and top songs that are on billboards. It’s shown as if its awards as it have ‘top internet’ album and top ‘active rock’song. The awards are on the left column and the artists names are on the right column.

Under the Masthead it shows two close up images and one long shot, of well-known celebrities with their page number at the bottom left of the image. Whereas the main image of the female artist it has her page number next to her shoe. They possibly don’t have their names or teasers next to them, as they may have been spoken about on the front of cover of the magazine.

The overall layout of the contents page is organised as everything is in its particular section. So that it doesn’t come across confusing to the target audience and it shows that it is an expensive magazine. As the layout is neatly done.

Research case studies 5

The Masthead is in a black and bold font and is the largest text on the page, so it stands out. It’s been split into three lines, having the most amount of letters on the second line. This gives the title a fun and quirky look.

This Vibe contents page has a limited colour palette of only three colours, Black, Grey and Red. This gives the whole design an old fashioned and formal appearance. They put the large ‘V’ behind the image and text, to still show that it’s vibe magazine. The Red heart is what they want the readers to be drawn to, as it’s the only thing on the page that’s in colour. It’s also been placed on the main image of Kanye West, by an anonymous hand illustrating where his heart should be. Which portrays that Kanye doesn’t have a heart. Relating to what the text on the page says, that questions if his been misunderstood. The hand could symbolise fans, that don’t know him but are judging him.
The main feature of the page is the main image of Kanye West, which is a medium close up of him. It shows him making direct contact with the audience to build intimacy. He has no facial expression, which makes him hard to read but is clear that his not happy. He has both hands in his pocket, showing that his not very confident. His dressed quiet smart and is wearing a blazer that is presently in fashion now, relating to the features of fashion that are in the magazine. His overall body language is very negative as well as the colour scheme of the magazine. As it’s has the theme of love, as the main features of the magazine are, ‘tortured’, ‘the fallen solider’ and ‘heartbreak’.

The Coverlines titles ‘Features’ and ‘Fashion’, are in a bold, italic font. Building a more old fashioned look. The text underneath are all in capitals and still act as teasers by not giving too much of the information to the readers. The numbers of the pages are put before the text as it’s the most important and it’s easier for readers to see it.
The coverlines only shows the information that was on the front page and they are further in the magazine as they start from ’64’. This makes readers look at all the other articles in the magazine before looking at the articles and information that they originally wanted to see.
At the bottom right corner of the contents page, it shows where the magazine is from‘New York city’ and the publishers that helped put it together.

Research Case Studies 4

This double page spread has a limited colour palette of black, red and white. Red represents danger and evil. White represents cleanliness. The main image is of Florence Welsh, who is UK artist that is currently a band.

It’s very hard for UK artists to get into the USA and …have managed to that. They have used one of the lines from their famous song ‘got the love’. This indicates that the USA has now got the love for them.

The font of the text is in italic writing, which is very formal and old fashioned. The layout of the columns is also very formal. This shows that the content of the article could be very serious.

The sheet that is on top of the steps is in red and white strips, to represent the American flag. The steps show how the group have now, climbed up to the top of the music industry.

The main image is a long shot; it takes up the whole of the left side of the page, which shows that Florence is very important. The colour of Florence’s hair is the same colour used in the flag, which makes her hair colour more vibrant. This hair colour is also in style nowadays, as it used to be a colour that people would avoid but now it is back in fashion. She’s making direct eye contact with the audience which builds intimacy.

Her body language shows that she’s very confident, as she is wearing nothing on her legs and has them stretched out. This pose is targeted more at the male audience, as females will be more interested in the shoes that she is wearing. She’s wearing a dress that has black cones on her breasts, which is showing that she’s trying to build the same fashion statement, as Lady Gaga. Her clothing is in all back which represents, darkness and death. This colour goes with the sub title of the double page spread ‘why is Florence Welch lying on her floor attacking herself’. As it shows there’s a dark side that her fans don’t know about. The overall appearance of the magazine is very simple, clear and formal.

Research Case Studies 3

The masthead of Vibe’s front cover is in a thick bold, white font and is the largest text on the page. Consumers are able to see it clearly amongst other competitors that Vibe may have. It’s positioned behind the image of Lil Wayne, which shows that Lil Wayne is more important than the magazine name, in this issue. The first letter ‘V’ in the name isn’t straight showing that the magazine content may not be completely formal.

The skyline lists worldwide artists that will be in the magazine which will attract readers. The text is in bold for ‘Meek Mill’ and ‘Common’ as they are the most important artists for this issue amongst the other artists in the list.

The Main image is a medium close up of Lil Wayne, his body language shows that his confident and in control. His head is held high showing that his important and above us. This is shown further by him wearing a red and gold sailor’s jacket with a feathered hat meaning that he is the captain. The red connotates danger and passion, when it’s presented with gold it connotates power and wealth. His wearing a pair of sunglasses with stars going across his right eye, indicating that he could possibly be looking up at the American flag as a sign of respect. On the other hand it could show that he best or the leader in that country, in the music industry, connecting to the anchorage saying ‘leading man?’.

He has a cross on his neck showing that his religious. He then has a red clock underneath which represents something negative about the time because of its colour.

The Sell lines have artists names in a large font, so it stands out from the other text and portrays that it’s an R&B magazine.

The structure of the magazine is very formal as it doesn’t consist of loads of bright colours and arrows. But keeps to a limited colour pallet 3 main colours; black, white and red. The price is £4.99; it’s shown in a small font as it could be expensive, for its target buyers. So Vibe have made sure that readers like everything that is already on the magazine, before noticing the pricing. The £4.99 is psychological pricing as they don’t make the price the full £5 as they want it to seem cheaper. The bar code is placed at the front of the magazine, as it’s not a book

At the bottom of the page in small print, Vibe explains that it doesn’t agree with everything ‘Chris Rock’ has said about ‘Waka’. College Magazine is an American magazine targeted for students in further education .
The Masthead is the largest text on the magazine and is in a bright blue font that represents cool and fresh. This shows that the magazine was issued at the start of a new term and relates to Mike Posner, as he is known for being ‘cool’. The main image overlaps the magazine name as the image is more important. The magazine is already well established so readers do not need to see the whole name to recognise it.

The Anchorage text tells us why Mike Posner is on the front, which explains why it is at the top and in bold next to his head. Therefore, readers are more likely to see it first before, before reading the other text. The text is in gold which connotates being the best and a winner. This therefore relates to what it says ‘Mike Posner is cooler than you’. They used the word ‘cooler’ as this also relates to the name of his first song which was a hit and went to number Readers should relate to this. The word ‘You’ is used to direct readers to the text as it encourages them to want to find out why they refer to them.

The text underneath isn’t in bold like the Anchorage text as its not as important but it advertises a new artist ‘1st world tour’. This is placed under the a worldwide artist, as they know people interested in music are more likely going to see it, having recognised Posner. Additionally, the new artist could be of the same genre and so they may be interested in buying tickets.

The sell lines have one part of its text in bold and a different colour, thus highlighting the most important information to grab its’ readers attention. They also try not to give to much information about everything by using rhetorical questions or quotes .‘ I slept with my professor’ -Illustrating a shocking story that won’t been in any other magazine. Although the speaker is anonymous, it is evident that it was a student, (which are the target audience).

The question ‘Should I break up with my major?’ , is written as if it is a relationship when in fact it is a course, the readers focus on the aspect of it being a relationship because that is what they have told themselves. Its also a question that most students would be asking as well, this persuades them to purchase the magazine to receive a different view and advice from another student.

This follows on to the next line of ‘Careers Do’s and Don’t’s‘ which is a catchy term that you are likely to remember. This also lends advice to students portraying further that its a magazine for college students.

Texting and finding out the latest gossip is what teenagers are most interested in. So by having a line stating ‘Texts from last night’ draws them in and entices them to buy as it doesn’t say what it’s going to be about . It also says ‘get the 411’which is a simplified way of communicating about getting the latest and best gossip. This splits the magazine into a gossip one as well as one to go for to get advice.

Sarcasm is used in one of the sell lines insinuating that its always‘hot in Philadelphia’ , In fact it is known that its not and a rhetorical question is used to see if people found it offensive. Instead it is thought to be ‘hilarious’. This intrigues readers with what occurred in that interview and what was actually talked about.

The main image of Mike Posner shows him with his head held high which shows that he is confident and his eyes are looking directly at the readers to build intimacy. He is also smiling showing that his happy and content. His body language shows that through his confidence he is ready to take whatever is pulled out in front of him as his hands are clasped together. He possibly could be religious as well as its the sign people do when they are about to pray. He has expensive jewellry on, to show off that he has money and is wearing all black which has a connotation of danger.

The layout of the magazine is quiet formal as it has complete straight lines and everything is in a certain order. This shows that it is quiet a serious magazine. It has a limited colour palette of 3 colours. The colours of the text dominate, as the main image is in black. The magazine is ‘100% free’ which is a play on words, its in capitals so readers can see it clearly. The bar code is at the front of the magazine as books have it at the back and its has the website of the magazine underneath so readers can find out more.
